My Thoughts on Bluesky vs Mastodon

I recently signed up for Bluesky, with the username @k8vsy.radio. As it seems like the “new thing” to do, so to speak.

After about a few days on it, and trying to figure out the feature set of Bluesky, I’ve concluded that, as far as amateur radio content goes, it’s the same few folks posting on Bluesky. While I hope more people jump ship from X/Twitter to Bluesky, I think Mastodon has more coverage for amateur radio topics.

Now, I don’t necessarily have data to back this up, but searching for the hashtags #HamRadio or #AmateurRadio on Bluesky, seems to yield the same 10 or so folks, every time. Whereas on Mastodon, especially on Mastodon.Radio, I get a lot more unique folks with different projects folks are working on. It’s great to see so many wonderful people and what they are contributing to amateur radio!

Now, I will be the first to admit, I’m likely biased since I’ve been on Mastodon.Radio for 2 years now and I love it there. But, Bluesky doesn’t seem to have enough amateur radio folks yet to make it feel like it is worth my time, at this moment.

Hopefully, that’ll change and I’ll be wrong. I hope to look back on this post in a few months or maybe a year and see that I am wrong.

Feel free to follow me over on Bluesky! I likely won’t post much there for now though.

P.S.: Happy holidays folks!
